Winning the Mental Game – Life and Sales Lessons You Can Learn from Venus Williams

When we think of the Williams sisters, it tends to be Serena who gets the most praise.

She may be the most dominant player to ever grace the women’s game. But her sister is also extremely successful. In fact, Venus has several grand slams to her credit and can offer just as many lessons as her sister.

And when it comes to the mental side of the game, there are few better.

Winning the Mental Game

Venus believes that winning a game of tennis involves a lot more than the physical aspect.

As she puts it:

“Tennis is mostly mental. Of course, you must have a lot of physical skill, but you can't play tennis well and not be a good thinker. You win or lose the match before you even go out there.”

That last statement is perhaps the most important.

Mentality plays a key role in any competitive environment. If you don’t have a steadfast belief in yourself and your abilities, it’s almost impossible to succeed.

Venus’ character and strength of mind play key roles in her success on the court. Overcoming the mental barriers lends her a self-belief that makes her a more formidable opponent.

What Can You Learn?

Much like Venus’ mental state affects her game, your mental state affects your delivery.

If you approach sales from a place of neediness, you exude desperation. People can sense it when you talk to them. They see that you lack confidence and they hesitate to do business with you.

If you have a true belief in yourself, your delivery becomes more compelling. The same goes if you truly believe that the product you’re selling will benefit the client.

Doubt can cloud your mind. And it’s that very doubt that may affect your sales performance.
