When you want something so badly and you don’t get it… how do you respond? Who said that winning makes you a winner in life?

Understanding and moving on is one of the most difficult things to do for most people after failing… and not everyone succeeds immediately in developing this ability.

Australian boxer Harry Garside was devastated by his loss in the second round at the Olympics. After winning bronze at the previous Olympics, he was convinced that gold was his this time around.

After the loss, in his own words, “I’ve been beating myself up for the last couple of hours since I last fought and had a couple of screams, a couple of cries, then I went and had some food and I had this realisation that this absolutely sucks. We all hate failing,” he said.

Then he had this realisation that self-worth is a totally different identity to develop. Now imagine if he had a conversation with someone in his formative years; perhaps his whole outlook would be different. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win, but the key is not to be defined by your wins or losses.

Your ability to understand failure is what will make you a success and develop that one trait everyone keeps talking about: RESILIENCE. Unfortunately, most salespeople are taught that to be resilient you have to push forward no matter what. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You actually have to become vulnerable and learn to accept that you will fail more times than you win.

This is how you learn.

I see so many salespeople beat themselves up when they lose deals because that is how they measure their self-worth and how winners and losers are measured. This is very short-term thinking with little focus on growth and learning.

Winners don’t measure their self-worth by their wins but by developing their ability to pick themselves up, keep going, and learn.

Acceptance doesn’t mean you ignore how bad you feel. It just means you accept it as a part of the journey toward moving towards your goals.

Gosh, if you learned to develop this way of being, you’d be surprised how quickly you would achieve your goals without fear and worry. You might actually start to enjoy the thrill of succeeding and focus on that rather than dwelling on your failures. You might be pleasantly surprised!
