Two Sales Lessons You Can Learn from The Rock’s Speech to the LA Lakers

Dwayne Johnson has enjoyed an exceptional career on the silver screen and in the squared circle.

And if you follow him on social media, you know he’s an inspirational personality. The Rock has a drive and determination to succeed that few can emulate.

This makes him a motivating force for everybody.

In 2018, he put those talents to good use when delivering a motivational speech to the LA Lakers. Here’s what salespeople can learn from Johnson’s words.

Lesson #1 – It’s Okay to Fail

During his speech, Johnson briefly recounted a criminal past that few may be familiar with:

“I was arrested multiple times before I was 16 years old.”

Johnson’s clearly made mistakes, especially early on in life. But the message he delivers here is that it’s okay to fail. Your mistakes shape who you are and how you perform just as much as your successes.

He has no pride in that arrest record. But he remembers it and uses it as a reminder that failure is just an opportunity to learn and change.

Lesson #2 – Be Grateful for What You Have

Sometimes, we get so caught up in the chase for success that we can’t see how far we’ve come.

Johnson recognises this too. In his speech, he revealed a technique that keeps him in the present moment. He stops and says the following to himself:

“Holy sh*t, the stuff I have around me right now, this is the stuff I dreamed of as a kid.”

Success can create fear in the most talented of salespeople. You feel a constant pressure to maintain or surpass the success that you’ve already achieved.

Ironically, it’s this very pressure that can damage your performance and create undesirable behaviours.

Take a moment to step back and appreciate what you have and how far you’ve come.
