What Sales Professionals Can Learn From Elon Musk’s Daily Routine

Elon Musk is one of the most prominent entrepreneurs of the modern era. He’s a brand unto himself and he’s earned billions from his innovative ideas.

But he’s also a salesperson at heart.

Musk understands how to sell people on the vision that lies behind all of his business efforts.

He’s also a creature of routine. And it’s from that routine that salespeople can learn how to achieve success in their own careers.

Planning for Success

Musk wakes up at 7am. After a quick shower, he gears up and starts planning out his day. Musk famously plans his work schedule in 5-minute intervals.

You don’t have to go that far. But what you do need to understand is that each of those intervals moves Musk closer to a goal. If it doesn’t serve Musk, it’s not worth five minutes of his time.

Think of these intervals as bricks. If you’re building a house, you need to place one brick at a time. Each interval represents Musk playing another brick.

The lesson here is that you’re not going to reach your goals immediately. As a salesperson, you need to understand that big plans require small steps.

Think about how you can adjust your own plans in a similar way.

No Two Days Are Ever the Same

Musk famously works for 80+ hours per week. But he also has so many ventures that he can’t create a set routine. One day he may work at SpaceX. Another day may see him dedicate some time to Tesla and some more time to media appearances.

He’s always learning new things.

And he adapts constantly to apply what he learns to his work.

That ability to adapt is one of Musk’s most important behaviours. Salespeople can learn from that behaviour. Use it to change how you interpret and apply information.
